ABL Biotechnologies Limited, Chennai, India

ABL is a pioneer in drug discovery and active pharmaceutical ingredients sourced principally from unusual micro-organisms sourced from marine and terrestrial environments. ABL has been involved in microbial culture collection, process & product engineering and development, phytochemical research, formulation development and contract research from its inception. Over the past sixteen years, ABL has established a microbial library over 3000 strains, holds 450 drug formulation licenses and has built unparalled expertise in product formulation and development in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and dietary segments.

The Company has been conducting research on new chemical entities for drug discovery which includes work on diabetes, cardio vascular ... disease, neuro-degenerative disease, anti-infectives and retroviral as well as liposomal drug delivery models. ABL has also been conducting extensive research in developing technologies for production of active pharmaceutical ingredients like Polysaccharides, Essential Fatty Acids, Natural Pigments, Tracers and Tags all from microbial sources. The Company has successfully developed technologies for production of Carotenoids, DHA and omega 3 fatty acid, and phycocyanin. In order to leverage its pool of research talent and knowledge, ABL has been pursuing many of its research endeavours through research collaborations with leading institutions and research organizations.

ABLs: Business Model

ABL has divided its business into two major Strategic Business Divisions:

Spectrum Division: is the P2P Formulations & Contract Manufacturing division of ABL supplying pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, cosmeceutical and dietary products to nearly 120 domestic companies.

The Pharmaceutical products cater to the General Supplementation, Ophthalmology, Pediatrics, Pregnancy and Lactation, Geriatrics, Arthiritis and Lupus, Cornorary Arterial Disease, Diabetes, Oncology and Dermatalogy segments. The nutraceutical and dietary products include fortified jams, juices and squashes, chocolates, spreads, sauces, biscuits etc for various segments and markets. These products are supplied under ABLs name while the nutraceutical and dietary products are supplied on specific orders under the brand name Sanctum. Many of the formulations offered by Spectrum have become leading brands.

Spectrum offers a complete service package comprising of a detailed study of the customer companys product basket, development of value added formulations, conduct of bioequivalence, shelf life and requisite toxicity studies, supply of samples, registration of trademarks, arranging manufacturing licences, manufacturing the product and final supply of finished products. Spectrum can boast of having in its customer portfolio those companies which have their own manufacturing units but choose to manufacture some of their products through Spectrum because of its quality and customer service.
Spectrum manufactures products for its customers from eleven outsourced facilities that are spread across various parts of India. This enables Spectrum to offers products in various formats like softgel and hard gel capsules, tablets, liquids, injectables and topicals.

Spectrums Customers include Intas Pharmaceuticals Limited, Zydus Cadila Healthcare Limited, Khandelwal Lab Private Limited, Biochem Limited, Fourrts India Lab Private Limited, T.T.K. Healthcare Limited, J.B. Chemical & Pharmaceutical Limited, Elder Healthcare Limited, Ajantha Pharma Limited and Indswift Limited.
Research & Development Division: ABL has also made enormous strides in the identification and commercial extraction of bio-pharmaceuticals, predominantly from microbes that have far reaching applications in ameliorating and preventing disease.

Research & Development Focus

ABL focuses its R&D efforts over three principal areas; Active Pharmaceutical Intermediates and New Chemical Entities and Drug Delivery.

Active Pharmaceutical Intermediates:

In its API programme, ABL focuses on products that have a variety of commercial application and enjoy large markets in nutrition, pharmaceuticals, and cosmeceuticals. These include:

Arachidonic AcidNeuronal development
Alpha Linolenic AcidAnti oxidant, Alzheimers & Parkinsons disease
Carotenoids
Beta caroteneAnti oxidant, Prevention of Cancer, UV blocker, Food & Feed Colorant
LuteinAnti oxidant, Food & Feed Colorant
LycopenePrevents prostrate cancer, anti oxidant, reduction of LDL, Food & Feed Colorant
AstaxanthinAnti oxidant, Food & Feed Colorant

Polysacharides
Sulphated PolysaccharidesDrug delivery, anti microbial, food additive
Hyaluronic AcidAnti aging, Osteoarthritis, Connective tissue disorders
PhospholipidsLiposomal drug Delivery, Dermatology

New Chemical Entities and Drug Development Focus:

With its large collection of microbial strains and compound libraries, ABLs research in its NCE / Drug Discovery program focuses at six disease areas. This model envisages discovery of natural molecules as drug targets and development until the preclinical stage after which these are out licensed to global pharma players.

Drug Discovery Focus:

ABL has carefully chosen to focus on discovery of drugs targeted at those disease states that have over the past decade shown a steadily alarming increase in statistics. ABL feels committed in catering to these disease states as it would then be able to reach out to more people. ABL would ensure that quality and adequate supply are not affected. Hence the disease states that ABL is working on are:

Anti Diabetic (Alpha Glucosidase Inhibition)‏
Anti Alzheimers (Acetyl Choline Esterase inhibition)‏
Anti Fungal (Chitin Synthase Inhibition)‏
Anti Viral (Reverse Transcriptase Inhibition)‏
Anti Tumor (Tubulin Inhibition)‏
Pain & Inflammation (PKG Inhibition, COX 2)

ABL hopes to be able to commence clinical trials on atleast two of its molecules by the year 2010.

Drug Delivery Focus:

ABL has been working on phospholipids under its Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients program and a natural extension of the same has an active programme on Liposomal Drug Delivery research. The reason being that a liposome is a vesicle, made out of the same material as a cell membrane, that is, phospholipds and it has over the years proved to be a far more effective drug delivery mechanism for treatment of chronic diseases like cancer.

This is perhaps the only program in this sphere of research to have received a grant from the Department of Biotechnology.

R & D Collaborations

In addition to in-house competencies, ABL enjoys a symbiotic and collaborative
relationship through joint development programmes with institutions of advanced
research like:
